What is a Pandemic?

A pandemic is a global disease outbreak. The disease can spread easily from person-to-person, cause serious illness, and can sweep across the country and around the world in very short time.

What is Avian Flu?

Or "bird flu?" Avian influenza is an infection caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses. These influenza viruses occur naturally among birds.
Usually, "avian influenza virus" refers to influenza A viruses found chiefly in birds, but infections with these viruses can occur in humans. The risk from avian influenza is generally low to most people however, confirmed cases of human infection from several subtypes of avian influenza infection have been reported since 1997.

Smithsonian Briefings

In June 2006, OPS and OSHEM held Town Hall meetings at most SI units on the agency's preparation plans regarding avian and pandemic influenza. The meetings focused on public health concerns regarding avian and pandemic influenza, the differences between them, and the need to develop strategies to prepare for them on public, agency, and individual levels.

The meetings also focused on what the Institution is specifically working on to ensure the safety and health of employees, as well as national treasures, in the event of a declared pandemic. The talk began with medical background information on influenza provided by Dr. Jules R. Duval, M.D. from OSHEM and then moved to a discussion of Continuity of Operations (COOP) planning provided by Mr. Bayne Rector of OPS, the SI Disaster Preparedness Coordinator.
